TECA Canada Launches New Mental Health Support Program

Culturally sensitive mental health services now available for newcomers and refugees dealing with settlement stress and trauma.

TORONTO - TECA Canada has launched a new mental health support program specifically designed for newcomers and refugees. The program addresses the unique challenges faced by immigrants, including settlement stress, cultural adjustment, and past trauma.

"Mental health support is a critical but often overlooked aspect of the settlement process," said Dr. Sarah Johnson, the program's clinical director. "Many newcomers have experienced trauma before or during migration, and then face additional stressors as they adapt to life in Canada."

Culturally Responsive Care

The program has been carefully designed to be culturally responsive and accessible, featuring:

  • Individual counseling services in 12 languages
  • Support groups for specific populations (youth, women, seniors)
  • Trauma-informed therapy approaches
  • Mental health first aid training for community leaders
  • Referrals to specialized psychiatric services when needed

Counselors have been recruited from diverse cultural backgrounds and receive ongoing training in culturally sensitive approaches to mental health care. The program actively works to reduce stigma around seeking mental health support.

Community Impact

"This program fills a significant gap in services," noted David Kim, Board Chair of TECA Canada. "Many newcomers face long waitlists for mental health care or encounter providers who don't understand their cultural context. Our approach addresses both issues."

The initiative is funded through a combination of government grants and private donations, allowing services to be offered at no cost to clients. In its first month, the program has already served over 50 individuals through a combination of one-on-one counseling and group sessions.

Those interested in accessing services can contact TECA's mental health program directly or be referred through other settlement service providers. All inquiries are handled with strict confidentiality.
